Position Summary
- Under supervision of an RN preceptor, the student nurse extern gains experiences and confidence in providing nursing care in a hospital setting.
Education
- Healthcare Student Worker/Student Nurse Extern Level I – Enrollment in a college clinical program in a healthcare field. Examples would include Nursing, Imaging, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Lab Tech, Surgical Tech, Pre-Med, Social Work, etc.
- Student Nurse Extern Level II and Student Nurse Extern Level III - Enrollment in an accredited ADN or BSN program and expected to graduate and pass boards within 9 months of hire. Position eligibility ceases if removed from nursing program or boards not passed within 9 months of hire.
- Student Nurse Extern Level III – Graduate of an LPN Program
Licenses and Certification
- Must be a student in good standing in an accredited nursing program and has successfully completed nursing arts course (e.g., Basics in Nursing, Fundamentals in Nursing, Nursing 101, etc.)
- BLS
- SNE III – Current Illinois Licensed Practical Nurse license
Experience and Skills
Role Specific Responsibilities
- Completes SNE I, SNE II, or SNE III responsibilities appropriate to position of hire and as noted on SNE skills checklist.
- Demonstrates ability to use clinical judgement in conjunction with critical thinking to recognize, act upon, and report changes in patient condition.
- Documents completely, timely, and accurately in the medical record
- Establishes a compassionate environment to provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and families.
- Exhibits self-directed growth by seeking educational opportunities to improve knowledge and skills.
- Under supervision of an RN preceptor,
- assesses patients to determine mental, physical, and spiritual needs.
- assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates an individual plan of care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care team.
- provides health teaching and counseling to promote, attain, and maintain the optimum health level of patients.
- serves as an advocate for the patient by communicating and collaborating with other health service professionals.
Compensation (Commensurate with experience):
$19.40 - $29.10
