SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Research Nurse Supervisor position is to provide supervision and coordination of research and protocol related activities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and external sponsors for effective and quality clinical trial outcomes.  Supervises research nurses and other research personnel as assigned by the Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology.  Scope of position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and requires adherence to the policies and procedures of the institution.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Administrative Management

Supervises research activity and is responsible for hiring, development, coaching, evaluating and disciplining department personnel. Assigns work to manage protocol activity and ensure compliance to all standards, policies and quality measures. Evaluates training and development needs of research staff.  Coordinates, plans, and develops training programs for professional and ancillary staff on research protocols, policies and procedures.  Serves as a liaison between Melanoma clinic, research team, other member of the multidisciplinary team, and outside sponsors.

Operational Management 

Manages the effective operation of multiple department protocols as designated by the Department Chair in collaboration with the principal investigator or study sponsor. Provides overall coordination and facilitation of research activities and protocol patient care. Collaborates with the physician, Research Nurse Manger and/or protocol sponsor regarding protocol design, budgeting, planning, implementation and evaluation. 

Protocol Management  

Manages protocol compliance involving quality assurance and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.  Collects and reports protocol-specific information.  Develops, implements and conducts audits and reviews/analyzes data and documentation.  Ensures policies and procedures are monitored and updated to include regulatory changes.  Coordinates development and implementation of research policies related to institutional and departmental programs in conjunction with other members of the research team.  Consults and collaborates with the research team and Principal Investigators in all aspects of protocol management.  6.  Reviews and coordinate protocol submissions and resubmissions to CRC and IRB.

Training and Development  

Precepts and assist in the training and mentoring of new research staff.  Communicates policy and procedures to personnel in the research area in accordance with institutional and departmental policies and procedures.  Assist in the development and enforcement of SOPs and other practices which enhance work flow and performance.  Oversight of the cross coverage schedule.  Assist with annual evaluation of research personnel.  Attendance at departmental, division, and institutional meetings may be necessary.

EDUCATION

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

Four years of registered nursing experience, to include one year of research nursing and one year of lead/mentor, project management, or supervisory experience.

Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

All of the following:

Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area. 

OTHER

Required:

Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
